The practical applications of traditional Chinese martial arts are often not apparent at first. Students often feel awkward and robotic at first.
Yet there is a sound logic behind many of the exercises, moves and forms because they are designed to allow our body to learn to move in new ways and develop new movement patterns. Our veteran instructors have always emphasised that the learning of routines and their application go hand in hand. You must always work hard but your effort must be applied in the correct manner.
In this session, fellow intern, Jie Long, volunteered to dig deeper beneath the various forms to understand the practical applications behind them. The masters were more than happy to have a willing volunteer to execute their movements on.
Educators always stress the importance of experiential learning because it allows the student to internalise the knowledge and be competent in its application... and the martial arts provides this avenue perfectly!
